Villa La Cartiera rises in Pontremoli, between the Via Francigena and the river Magra and takes its name from the paper mill next door, built in 1822 in the premises of what was once an ancient mill belonging to the Commenda of San Leonardo of the Knights of Malta, whose first testimonies date back to 1436.
Villa La Cartiera is a historical place of great beauty and authenticity, surrounded by greenery in the heart of Lunigiana. In '800 it was used as a manor house and since 1888 it belongs to the same family. The historic house, located in a secular park, is on three levels: on the ground floor there are the cellars, while on the first floor there are the beautiful living rooms and dining rooms, together with the kitchen and a master bedroom. On the second level there are the bedrooms interspersed with characteristic lounges and the music room. The walls and ceilings of all the rooms are decorated with drawings made by the painter Triani, belonging to the Pontremoli family of artists and decorators; the original furnishings have been enriched over the years by different generations, passionate about art and antiques.
The Park, which surrounds the Villa, has been carefully looked after by the owners, who have preserved the many centuries-old plants, thus offering the viewer a well-kept, but strongly authentic landscape that provides a unique experience, a real journey 'out of time' made of sounds, scents, majestic trees, plants and flowers. There is a spectacular swimming pool built in the early '900, fed only and continuously by the river nearby.
